Teahen Revisited

Falcon:

I read the submission from FS regarding Teahen with the link to the Coralville newspaper. I have not decided whom to support of the three running for the office. But, I have been looking into all of them and I recognize the information in the Coralville piece as the same information submitted by a British gentleman. I did not see any where in the Coralville piece where they attributed their info to the Brit. Here is the link to the blog and the Brit’s letter. According to what I’ve seen there the British gentleman was a coworker with Teahen and has an axe to grind. It would be nice to have another witness or coworker to collaborate.

Miller-Meeks has some RINO tendencies of her own, which include abortion rights and squishiness on the war. Both Teahen and Miller-Meeks are recent converts to the Republican Party. Of course the natural question to conservatives is: why? I am still investigating Harder.

I want a purge of the RINOs and until we can get rid of them all we can’t reconstitute the Republican Party.

Teahen's Resume Questioned

Falcon,

How well do voters know Peter Teahen?

It appears another seeker of justice and truth, no matter what liberals may say, has been doing some research into primary candidates. This site has delved into the Republicans seeking to represent Iowa's 2nd Congressional District.

The source in the People's Republic of Johnson County is concerned about resume padding. From the looks of what he is reporting May 28th, overstuffed would be a better term.

Bettendorf Revises TIF Policy

Bettendorf to stop throwing TIF dollars away

Bettendorf’s TIF policy, which has not been updated in more than 10 years, states that TIFs will not be used for retail developments. However, Bettendorf has in recent years broken it's own TIF policy for such purposes, with Duck Creek Plaza being one example.

Alderman Joe Douglas, 2nd Ward, said he thinks TIFs should not be used to help a business that would be a direct competitor with an existing business in the city. He said he was surprised to learn earlier this month that the city is considering creating a TIF district to help the Animal Emergency Center, 1510 State St., relocate to a site near 28th and State streets.

News of the potential TIF district angered Michael O’Banion, owner of Bettendorf Veterinary Hospital, 3510 Belmont Road. He said he was forced to comply with many costly city requirements.

In a letter to the council, O’Banion wrote, “How can the city allow one business to shoulder such financial burdens that greatly benefited the city and then turn around and extend to another similar business preferential treatments and financial incentives?”

Malinee said the same thing happened when Home Depot located to Duck Creek Plaza, which received TIF incentives, thereby affecting longtime Bettendorf business K&K Hardware.

June 12th: 'Carbon Belch Day'

Conservative grassroots group Grassfire.org wants people to use as much energy as possible on June 12 to break free from "carbon footprint guilt."

Conservative grassroots group Grassfire.org wants people to use as much energy as possible on June 12 "hosting a barbecue, going for a drive, watching television, leaving a few lights on, or even smoking a few cigars."

The group wants to "help Americans break free from the 'carbon footprint guilt' being imposed by Climate Alarmists."

Grassfire.org president Steve Elliott said climate alarmist's theories are off the mark. "It's time for Americans to purge ourselves of the false guilt that Al Gore and the Climate Alarmists have placed on us," Elliott said.

Grassfire.org said it chose June 12 as the day it wants Americans to rev up their SUVs because it coincides with expected debate in Congress over a $1.2 billion carbon tax rebate program. "Carbon Belch Day will have at least as much impact on the so-called 'planetary emergency' of man-made global warming as the goofy save the earth mandates telling us to turn our lights off for an hour," said Elliott.

Good Riddance Teddy

Falcon,

How come we have not seen the dancing in the street wishing Ted Kennedy good bye and good riddance? When a conservative is stricken with a debilitating illness or dies the leftist media salivates and begins popping champagne corks and blowing party favors. Look how the mainstream media delighted in joy when Ronald Regan (the last true conservative president) died, or how democrats were elated to see Charlton Heston die so they could attempt to pry the gun from his cold dead hands. I'm pissed that the only conservative talk show host to speak out about how rotten, evil, and immoral a person Ted Kennedy is, is Michael Savage. Why the double standard? I'll proudly say it right here, I'm willing to see the fitting demise for this filthy congressman who had all but destroyed this nation into a haven for illegal immigrants, a place to slaughter unborn babies, and to burn the flag that American blood was spilled to keep us free. We will not miss you Ted.

Mislabeled Burlington council video airs instead.

In a strange new twist, Burlington’s city council video aired in place of West Burlington’s council meeting Friday. It was humorous to watch Burlington’s meeting play to completion with “WB City Council – Previously Recorded” displayed at bottom of screen.

And we thought it couldn’t get any worse…

How About Game Stats?

Falcon,

That's two shutouts to open the season and there's not been one mention of pitching; a little hard to follow from a distance (Tennessee). If not a box score, maybe the final totals of runs/hit/errors and battery combinations could be included.

Thanks!

-DH

Great idea!

Republicans Conservative Pretenders

“The headline Wednesday on Drudge, from Politico, said, ‘Republicans Stunned by Loss in Mississippi.’ It was about the eight-point drubbing the Democrat gave the Republican in the special House election.

My first thought was: You have to be stupid to be stunned by that. Second thought: Most party leaders in Washington are stupid—detached, played out, stuck in the wisdom they learned when they were coming up, in ‘78 or ‘82 or ‘94. Whatever they learned then, they think pertains now... They are also—Hill leaders, lobbyists, party speakers—successful, well-connected, busy and rich. They never guessed, back in ‘86, how government would pay off! They didn’t know they’d stay! They came to make a difference and wound up with their butts in the butter. But affluence detaches, and in time skews thinking. It gives you the illusion you’re safe, and that everyone else is. A party can lose its gut this way. ...

‘This was a real wakeup call for us,’ someone named Robert M. Duncan, who is chairman of the Republican National Committee, told the New York Times. This was after Mississippi. ‘We can’t let the Democrats take our issues.’ And those issues would be? ‘We can’t let them pretend to be conservatives,’ he continued. Why not? Republicans pretend to be conservative every day.”

Corporate Welfare

Falcon:

I understand that a farmer earning a meager $200,000 can collect welfare as well as those earning over $2.5 million complements of the American taxpayer through the dead beat farm bill passed by our out of touch legislative group in Washington.

When is this nonsense going to stop? Are there any farmers and landowners that don’t get welfare checks from the government compliments of the hard pressed taxpayer?

Seldom mentioned are the movie stars, public servants, municipalities, sports figures and other money grabbers who get farm welfare checks without ever growing a blade of grass or producing food of any variety.

It’s as though the farm bill is a necessity or something. Why is this farm bill such an important thing when most of our food comes from third world countries now even fish and beef? What is this welfare costing billions in tax dollars buying us?

I think most Americans would be happy to live on $200,000 a year plus welfare; so how about letting the rest of us cash in on this easy money forced on those that don’t need it.

Nikes Top Panthers 1-0

Nikes extend undefeated streak to 9-0.

But Ariel Stevens may be out with injury. Lippert to play hurt.

Nike Ariel Stevens (10) scores a goal over Mt. Pleasant defender Sydney Burden (9) with 7:33 remaining in the first half Thursday night at Tackleson Field in Burlington. Stevens’ goal proved to be the winning margin as Notre Dame – West Burlington – Danville – New London defeated Mount Pleasant, 1-0.

Just seconds after celebrating her goal, Ariel Stevens is on the ground grasping her left shin in pain after colliding with Mount Pleasant’s Sydney Burden (right) as she advanced the ball down the left side near the Panther’s goal. Stevens was the second Nike starter lost to injuries in the first half. Teammate Laura Lippert suffered a hip injury after a hard fall, but was able to walk off the field. Stevens was carried off the field and later loaded into a vehicle to seek medical help.

Coach Ryan Rump was concerned with condition of both injured players saying, “We’re not quite sure yet. Time will tell with both of them. I think Ariel [Stevens] is a little more serious than what Laura [Lippert] is. I think Laura’s got a hip pointer and it’s going to be painful for her but I think she’s going to play tomorrow [against Burlington]. [With] Ariel we’ll have to wait to see what the x-rays show. It looked like it was little more serious than Laura’s was though. Something in her shin she heard crack. Anytime they say that it’s never good. It’s pretty painful for her, so I don’t know; I guess we’ll see.”

Nikes put undefeated season on the line today against Burlington.

“We probably have our toughest test of the year [Friday when] we play Burlington.” Rump says, “That will be our toughest test to date. We’ll see how we respond.”

Why would the state give casinos a break on smoking when they didn’t give the mom and pop stores a break when Wal-Mart moved into Iowa towns and put most of them out of business by lowering prices until they vanished?

Casinos deserve nothing better than anyone else gets but as usual money does the talking with the Iowa legislature. If you have the cash you get the vote and that’s how Iowa passes special interest legislation.

When you can vote yourself raises by ripping off the taxpayer does anyone think our legislatures would bend over backwards to give us a break? Politicians are natural born liars and will do or say anything to get elected and once elected those promises vanish into thin air never to be honored or see the light of day again.

Just look how the City of Boreington has stolen our tax dollars for dreams of grandeur and foolish law suits. You couldn’t trust a supervisor or elected city or county official to stand up and be honest if your life depended on it.

I could care less if all the casinos in Iowa closed tomorrow or even today for that matter. Iowa lawmakers have degraded themselves down to the level of whale dung with the advent of raises for nothing and the smoking exemption for casinos.

The Ethanol plant is another example of wasted tax dollars that does nothing but line the pockets of those already stuffed with money complements of the taxpayer and dead weight, tax supported loser supervisors.

High Expectations for Falcon Softball

Defending District Champs Play First Game Monday at Central Lee, First Home Game Tuesday against Cardinal

West Burlngton – Notre Dame softball team captains, Heather Gray (left), Mystal Perkins (center), and Hannah Milligan (right) have high expectations for this year’s softball team. Falcon softball team is the defending district champion falling only one game short of a trip to the state tournament last season. Five Notre Dame girls have united with West Burlington players this season through a joint agreement between schools. Falcons first test is an away game Monday against Central Lee, their first home game is Tuesday against Cardinal.

Gunslinger Caston Returns

Falcons have topflight pitching in reserve, if needed.

Opposing batters will again face freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Caston’s speed and variety from the mound. Caston’s arm helped take the Falcons to a regional final against Durant last year but fell short of a trip to the state tournament. Falcons have more topflight pitching talent in the dugout this season than most of their opponents will have on the mound with returning senior Ashley Goudie and veteran Notre Dame junior, Heather Gray.

McCain Chasing Windmills

“After the coldest April in 11 years, John McCain offers a ‘market friendly’ approach to global warming—saying we ‘have a genius for adapting, solving problems.’ But shouldn’t the problems be real?...[W]e were disappointed when, at an Oregon wind turbine manufacturer on Monday, [McCain] seemed to embrace the shaky environmentalist position on global warming.

Saying the costs of our reliance on fossil fuels ‘have added up now in the atmosphere, in the oceans and all across the natural world,’ he proposed that by 2050, the U.S. should reduce CO2 emissions to a level 60% below that emitted in 1990. The question is, why?

Cold water was thrown on the climate-change disaster hypothesis by the National Climate Data Center’s recent announcement that last month was the coldest April in more than a decade and the 29th coolest since record keeping began 114 years ago. The average temperature was 1 degree cooler than the average April temperature of the entire 20th century.

A few weeks ago, as North America was emerging from one of its coldest and snowiest winters in decades, the climate center issued a statement saying that snow cover on the Eurasian land mass had been the most extensive ever recorded, and that this March had been only the 63rd warmest since 1895.

On April 24, the World Wildlife Fund published a study, based on last September’s data, showing that Arctic ice had shrunk from 13 million square kilometers to just 3 million. What the WWF omitted was that by March the Arctic ice had recovered to 14 million square kilometers and that the ice cover around the Bering Strait and Alaska was at the highest level ever recorded...

We were pleased that McCain endorsed nuclear power as a pollution-free source of energy that can help us toward energy independence while reducing emissions. But the fact is that we will need more energy, not less, by 2050, from all sources. Both economic and technological growth will demand more... Global warming is debatable, both as to its causes and its effects.

By taking the lead on domestic energy, McCain could help solve a real problem and make a clear distinction between himself and his head-in-the-tundra opponents.”

Some Questions

Falcon,

What's the latest on the ethanol plant? Is Burlington going to give treated water to the plant free?

I've heard they already have been handed 20 million dollars in giveaways from the pinheads of the region. And that the taxpayers need to give more so the alcohol plant can make better profits for the shareholders!

And have you heard if the quiet zones in Burlington are about to be installed for 350 thousand dollars or is it going to cost a little more than originally thought? Just wondering!

Oh yes how are the profits at the Huck’s Harbor going? Are they making money hand over fist like they said they would?

Just a few questions for people to think about, after all that's what they were told by the elected officials and pinheads of the region!

Des Moines County Vehicle Haven for Illegals?

"— An Iowa Department of Transportation investigator learned from talking with Des Moines County Treasurer's Office personnel that Source #14 was involved in making applications to title and register cars on behalf of people living in Postville. The source said that, more than 200 times, he or she received application information and money and had the registrations and titles sent to various Burlington/West Burlington addresses. Source #14 then arranged to pick up the documents and sent them to the vehicle owners in Postville."

Smoking In Casinos?

Falcon,

I think one of the reasons casinos are allowed to let people smoke is because of the 3 Indian casinos in Iowa. They are not regulated by the state, and they would be able to allow smoking and the state could not stop them. Tama has a huge casino now, much bigger then any other casino in Iowa, and they would probably triple in size and ruin any casinos within miles of it. They are going to allow 18 year olds to play poker, and a private casino would get fined if they would even let an 18 year old in the door. The two casinos in Western Iowa were allowing 18 year old to drink, and the state could do nothing about it. I don't smoke myself, but I sure could see the reason why they allowed casinos to let people smoke in them. Catfish bend has one side, which allows smoking, and the other side doesn't.

Environmentalists' Wild Predictions

Now that another Earth Day has come and gone, let's look at some environmentalist predictions that they would prefer we forget.

At the first Earth Day celebration, in 1969, environmentalist Nigel Calder warned, "The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind." C.C. Wallen of the World Meteorological Organization said, "The cooling since 1940 has been large enough and consistent enough that it will not soon be reversed." In 1968, Professor Paul Ehrlich, Vice President Gore's hero and mentor, predicted there would be a major food shortage in the U.S. and "in the 1970s ... hundreds of millions of people are going to starve to death." Ehrlich forecasted that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980 and 1989, and by 1999 the U.S. population would have declined to 22.6 million. Ehrlich's predictions about England were gloomier: "If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000."

In 1972, a report was written for the Club of Rome warning the world would run out of gold by 1981, mercury and silver by 1985, tin by 1987 and petroleum, copper, lead and natural gas by 1992. Gordon Taylor, in his 1970 book "The Doomsday Book," said Americans were using 50 percent of the world's resources and "by 2000 they [Americans] will, if permitted, be using all of them." In 1975, the Environmental Fund took out full-page ads warning, "The World as we know it will likely be ruined by the year 2000."

Harvard University biologist George Wald in 1970 warned, "... civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind." That was the same year that Sen. Gaylord Nelson warned, in Look Magazine, that by 1995 "... somewhere between 75 and 85 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct."

It's not just latter-day doomsayers who have been wrong; doomsayers have always been wrong. In 1885, the U.S. Geological Survey announced there was "little or no chance" of oil being discovered in California, and a few years later they said the same about Kansas and Texas. In 1939, the U.S. Department of the Interior said American oil supplies would last only another 13 years. In 1949, the Secretary of the Interior said the end of U.S. oil supplies was in sight. Having learned nothing from its earlier erroneous claims, in 1974 the U.S. Geological Survey advised us that the U.S. had only a 10-year supply of natural gas. The fact of the matter, according to the American Gas Association, there's a 1,000 to 2,500 year supply.

Here are my questions: In 1970, when environmentalists were making predictions of manmade global cooling and the threat of an ice age and millions of Americans starving to death, what kind of government policy should we have undertaken to prevent such a calamity? When Ehrlich predicted that England would not exist in the year 2000, what steps should the British Parliament have taken in 1970 to prevent such a dire outcome? In 1939, when the U.S. Department of the Interior warned that we only had oil supplies for another 13 years, what actions should President Roosevelt have taken? Finally, what makes us think that environmental alarmism is any more correct now that they have switched their tune to manmade global warming?

Here are a few facts: Over 95 percent of the greenhouse effect is the result of water vapor in Earth's atmosphere. Without the greenhouse effect, Earth's average temperature would be zero degrees Fahrenheit. Most climate change is a result of the orbital eccentricities of Earth and variations in the sun's output. On top of that, natural wetlands produce more greenhouse gas contributions annually than all human sources combined.

Environmentalists Should Pay

Falcon:

I think Al Gore and the other radical environmentalist should apologize to the world for their bold outright lies about global warming.

Because of people like Al Gore, a confirmed abuser of our resources along with other environmental demigods our children have been brainwashed by having the Al Gore movie forced on them in schools across the country. This is no different than the communist of the world brainwashing their children
in untruths.

We have major oil problems because of these same people and the liberal judges they get to stop drilling in the United States. I think all confirmed environmentalist should be paying $30 per gallon for gasoline because of the damage they've done to our country by preventing oil drilling and stopping the use of nuclear energy.

We then have judges and lawmakers that bend over for these environmental radicals by passing and upholding their special interest laws. What we have is a few left wing radical environmentalists ruining the lives of the many, a situation that just makes me sick. When will the American people wake up and put a stop to special interest buying off legislation?

These liberal misfits have done all they can to ruin our once great country and make us slaves to foreign oil.

Each time you fill up the tank or pay your utility bill you should be well reminded of who is causing this dilemma and ruination of America and stop blaming Bush for something that was started long before he took office.

New Video, Same Failure

Mayor Trousil says he’s not required to record meetings.

After failing to air the April 16th council meeting on all six tries, the failures continue. This time its the May 7th council meeting - a meeting that lasted over 3-hours could only manage 6-minutes on air!

The 6-short minutes that the video played was just long enough to hear Mayor Trousil complain about the videos, saying the State of Iowa doesn’t require him to record and air the meetings and he is tired of hearing complaints. Apparently Mayor Trousil doesn’t believe he should so much as lift a finger to keep the good citizens of West Burlington informed.

Councilwoman Therese Lees quickly reminded Trousil “that there are quite a few people that do watch it” and the videos should be made to work. Councilman Rod Crowner also chimed in that he would like to see the videos work.

Both Lees and Crowner are right. Citizens want to be kept informed of their government and it’s actions. Keeping citizens informed by airing their council meetings is the right thing to do.

In addition, West Burlington taxpayers have already invested good money to purchase the equipment used to record the meetings. Is Trousil suggesting he and the council wasted our money? We hope not.

It’s time to fix the videos.

Midnight Sellout

Falcon,

Ms. Lees is 100% correct in her letter about the state raises being excessive and based on nothing but one of the deadly seven sins. Nothing in this state, county or city when it comes to raises is based on job performance. The people in Des Moines that don’t represent us sneak around in the middle of the night passing legislation favorable to the people buying them off and to hell with the average citizen of Iowa.

Can anyone tell me why the casinos were exempt from the smoking ban? Could it have had anything to do with money? Will we ever know the real reason the casinos got their exemption? This is just another example of crooked legislation.

Iowa laws are passed or rejected depending on the amount of money it takes to purchase the votes; it’s as simple as that. We should call it “Deep Pocket Legislation” or “Midnight Sellout”.

Offended By State Pay Raises

Senator Tom Courtney:

I am outraged with the passing legislation regarding the ridiculous pay raise for our Governor, Lt Governor, Attorney General, State Auditor as well as Secretary of State. Raises from 10 - 24 % are out of line. Here in southeast Iowa, we are hard hit with factories closing and downsizing, unemployment is high and there are many Iowans struggling to make ends meet! This coupled with the health care provided at no or minimal out of pocket cost is just unreasonable to me a taxpayer. For the last 2 years I have had to pay State taxes besides what was deducted from my paycheck!!!!!!

I am strapped paying taxes double time, as I not only pay taxes as an individual but also pay huge amounts as a commercial taxpayer with no roll back to speak of. I am a small business owner, operating the West Burlington Mini Storage, and it is ridiculous the amount of money I pay for state, school, city and county taxes. I am now faced with increasing the monthly rates for my units just to break even. And as I said this is a depressed area for factory growth. The State of Iowa is slowly seeing the demise of small business owners as many of us are over burdened with TAXES. Needless to say, I was not happy that the legislature was not able to address the commercial taxes or even to provide a more equitable tax rollback to encourage development of commercial growth.

I am an RN employed at GRMC, formerly BMC, for the last 30 years. And it has been evident that for the last 3 years the number of patients have been decreasing as they do not or cannot afford health care. So with the decline in the number of patients, it then reflects the number of RNs required to care for them, so now my paycheck has been influenced as well, as I have been required to cut back the number of hours I work as well as the rest of the employees at GRMC. I am a member of the West Burlington City Council, currently serving my 5th term as council member. We have not increased our pay for the last 6 years and there are no perks either!

There are many citizens who I have talked to regarding the pay increases and they are in agreement. If the citizens of the State of Iowa were more affluent and the unemployment was markedly lower, I would not object to a more reasonable and fair pay raise, but this is ludicrous. I read where the private sector received an increase of 3.9% on average, however there was also an increase in their health care costs. I would not object to a yearly cost of living.

I would like for you and Rep Sands to introduce legislation so that pay raises for our States' government positions be put to a vote by the citizens of the State of Iowa. This vote would be simultaneous with our state elections; so that when we vote for our States highest held offices, it will be considered a report card for those elected officials that served and represented us. That way I have a say in who I want in office and how much I am willing to pay them, and those who seek re-election, I know they are not in it for the money.

Hoping for a reply, by the way which way did you vote on this issue?

Frustrated taxpaying citizen

May 10th Is Astronomy Day

Telescope Event Planned at Wal-Mart

The Southeast Iowa Astronomy Club will be hosting an Astronomy Day event on Saturday, May 10th at the south end of the West Burlington Wal-Mart parking lot. Beginning at sunset, SIAC members will have telescopes available to give the public a chance to take a look at the night sky, including the moon and several planets. There will also be informative talks, and information about the Southeastern Iowa Astronomy Complex located in Big Hollow Creek Recreation Area. In the event of bad weather, the rain date is Sunday, May 11th.

Astronomy Day is a grass roots movement designed to share the joy of astronomy with the general population - "Bringing Astronomy to the People." On Astronomy Day, thousands of people who have never looked through a telescope will have an opportunity to see first hand what has so many amateur and professional astronomers all excited. Astronomy clubs, science museums, observatories, universities, planetariums, laboratories, libraries, and nature centers host special events and activities to acquaint their population with local astronomical resources and facilities. Many of these events are located at non-astronomical sites; shopping malls, parks, urban centers-truly Bringing Astronomy to the People. It is an astronomical PR event that helps highlight ways the general public can get involved with astronomy - or at least get some of their questions about astronomy answered. Astronomy Week encompasses Astronomy Day starting on the previous Monday and ending on the following Sunday.

Council Video Fails Again - #4

Tuesday’s attempt at airing the April 16th council meeting failed again (that’s number 4 if you’re counting). This time the video ended after only 12-minutes, making it the shortest of the four broadcasts so far.

Oh well, I guess there’s still a tiny chance it will play Friday (#5). Maybe we should start an office pool – odds are 5-1 it won’t play.
